On December 10, 2021, we announced the closing and relocation of the district’s Plant Operations facility at 1707 Russell St./1720 Oregon St. in Berkeley due to structural and indoor environmental safety concerns.
Today, we are sharing final results of three assessments of 1707 Russell St./1720 Oregon St. that we recently received. We are inviting community members to attend a virtual Community Meeting on February 9 at 6:00 pm to discuss the findings of these assessments with a subject matter expert and to hear the next steps planned for this facility by the district.

In summary, BUSD interprets these reports to indicate the following:
A high level of lead contamination in the building and significant structural deficiencies require the closure of the facility at this time.
A finding of contamination in the soil requires remediation. BUSD recognizes the importance of remediating these contaminants and is currently working with our scientists in conjunction with regulatory agencies to remediate this issue. At this time, while we work to make necessary plans for the remediation, the district takes assurance in the report indicating there is minimal risk of off-site migration.
We invite the community to read the three reports, which will be reviewed in the Community Meeting.

En este momento, un alto nivel de contaminación de plomo en el edificio y deficiencias estructurales significativas requieren el cierre de la instalación.
El hallazgo de contaminación en el suelo requiere su descontaminación. El BUSD reconoce la importancia de descontaminar estos contaminantes y actualmente trabaja con nuestros científicos, junto con agencias normativas, para resolver este problema.
